Panic Attack Medications
There are millions of people that suffer from panic attacks and the causes are varied but often include a stressful, depression or anxiety background. There are a few medications that can help with panic disorder and they are usually more effective if combined with some cognitive behavior therapy.
Let’s go through some of the different medications that may help you with your panic attacks.
Tricyclic Antidepressants – these are quite strong antidepressants that are often used in the treatment of depression and also obsessive behaviors so are often a good choice for those who suffer from panic disorder.
Beta Blockers – these are antihypertensive medications that are used to reduce or control the symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks. Such symptoms include shaking and rapid heartbeat.
Benzodiazepines - the more known name for this is Valium and is used to treat anxiety, stress, panic disorders and insomnia. These medications can actually cause anxiety as a side effect in some people though so caution should be taken when using this type of medication.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors [SSRI] – these antidepressants are used to help with symptoms of anxiety and depression and can also be helpful for panic attacks. These medications work by maintaining levels of serotonin in the brain.
These are the main medications that are subscribed for panic attacks and some medications will work better with some people than for others. Sometimes it is a matter of trial and error until you find the medication that works for you.
